    • @DennisJacksonvts
      @DennisJacksonvts 26 дней назад

      You can do this. First, don't focus on snapping your wrist. Wrist snap doesn't work and I don't recommend doing it. For snapping to work you must time the contact perfectly. Instead of snapping, I recommend to focus on clawing the ball. To hit topspin you need the hand to be in a curved position when you make contact. If you claw the ball, you're in the curved hand position while you are swinging your arm. If you do this, you're guaranteed to be in the claw position at contact. Also, after contact look to see if your fingers are pointed downward. If the fingers aren't pointed down, then you didn't claw the ball and you won't create topspin. For more info about clawing, watch my video here - ruclips.net/video/MT2T3-7zqpg/видео.html

    I coach a boys' high school team. We are trying to get our players to "press" when they block. I am looking for 1-3 things that I can tell them to do. I hate telling them, "you're not pressing" but I don't have any specific things to tell them that they are doing incorrectly that keeps them from pressing, like your head is up, or your legs aren't kicking out, etc.

    • @DennisJacksonvts
      @DennisJacksonvts Месяц назад

      Record them blocking so they can see what they are doing. Video from along the net to show the net penetration. They got to get a feel of what it's like to do it right. Do a drill where they jump and penetrate the net and touch an object on the other side. Focus on the correct technique for jumping and penetrating the net. After they learn what it feels like, have a coach or player stand on a box on the other side and hit the ball. Focus on perfect repetitions. The goal for the hitter on the box is to get blocked. Have the hitter hit line and have the blocker block line. Then do cross court. Have the blocker focus on correct hand position, angling the ball down into the court. Technique should be the easier part of blocking. The harder part is the timing. After the blocker becomes more comfortable with the block jump technique, penetrating the net, and hand position - start to practice blocking a ball that has been set by the setter. Getting good a blocking is difficult because you must learn to read and anticipate the play of the opponent. Hope this helps.

      You might try starting with your hands in front of you before you jump. As you squat to jump, be gliding your hands along the net. Focus on having the hands go up then at the end reach over the net. Try to do the same motion each time you block so you become consistent with how you move.

    Hi Dennis, Question: Does this apply to indoor. We were always told to leave our wrist very loose until contact and then create the topspin. For this drill it looks as if when your elbow is in front, your hand is still in the claw position and we were taught to have our wrist loose to where it looks like it's just hanging there and looks like we have a serving platter and then the wrist comes forward through the swing the create the clawing over the ball. Any advice on whether our wrist should be loose through the progression would be much appreciated.

    • @DennisJacksonvts
      @DennisJacksonvts 6 месяцев назад

      When you're learning how to hit, I wouldn't focus on having a loose wrist. Focus on creating topspin by clawing the ball. For a ball tight to the net, a loose wrist can work to help to hit the ball downward. In this situation, topspin isn't so important.

    Really good video. FIVB rotation position rules are very relaxed. Not only the foot on the floor at the moment of the service hit is relevant, but also the correct last contact of the relevant foot with the floor before the service hit qualifies for correct positional order. So you can move much earlier and be in motion as long as not both feet touch the floor in violation of the rotational position at the moment of the service hit.

    • @DennisJacksonvts
      @DennisJacksonvts 10 месяцев назад

      After you block, you need to quickly move off the net and get in position to take an approach to hit. The team should try to pass the ball to the setter so the setter can set. It's usually best for the team to pass the ball closer to the right side of the court rather than the middle so the setter is able to get to the ball. If the setter is struggling to get to the ball to set, the team needs to pass the ball higher and further off the net. The setter can also be in a position closer to the passing target area so it's easier for the setter to get to the ball.

      When hitting the ball to your players focus on creating topspin. Wrap your hand over the top of the ball. Create topspin so you can control the ball and hit in a straight line. Toss the ball to yourself and contact the ball above you not out in front. Focus on wrapping the hand over and finish with the fingers pointed downward. Hope this helps.

    Improve jump & timing

    • @DennisJacksonvts
      @DennisJacksonvts Год назад

      For improving your jump and timing, I would definitely first focus on the approach. Get the approach correct then from the many repetitions approaching to jump and hit you will increase your vertical. For timing, you need to practice anticipating the ball. Develop consistent footwork. As the setter is setting the ball, you need to watch and anticipate how fast the ball is coming, how high the ball is set, and where the ball is set. You need to get good at "reading" the ball. The better you are at anticipating where the ball is going, the better you will be at getting in the correct position to hit. As you approach, you need to speed up or slow down. For example, if the ball is coming lower and faster than expected, you need to speed up. If the ball is coming higher and slower than expected, then you need to wait, then go fast. The only way you get better at timing is with a focus on anticipation. If you don't anticipate then you are just guessing and your timing will be off. The fastest way to improve timing is to exaggerate the play. For example, have the setter set the ball extremely high. This will force you to figure out when to start the approach. Then also, have the setter set the ball extremely fast. This will force you to go faster. Practice these extreme situations and you'll improve your timing. Hope this helps.

    Where does everyone go for defense?

    • @DennisJacksonvts
      @DennisJacksonvts Год назад

      Great question! The defense will depend on the team. Generally, for when a team is running a 4-2 offense, the setter is basically on the front row like when the setter would be on the front row during a 5-1. The setter blocks at RF. There are two styles of defense most teams play. Perimeter and man up. Perimeter defense is where you have the 3 back row players positioned near the boundary lines. The RB is near the right side line. The middle back is near the baseline. The LB is near the left side line. The idea is to keep the ball in front of the players so they only need to move forward to get the ball. The wing defenders (LB and RB) will usually cover tips to the middle of the court. For man-up defense, one of the back row players will hang out behind the block. This will typically be the RB player. The other two back row players will be responsible for covering the entire back court. This similar to play doubles defense. The players at the net blocking will drop back to help play defense when they aren't needed to be at the net to block.

    hi just wandering why you put Rotation #1 for every single rotation?

      Hi, I'm not sure what your question is. In the video, I explain the first 3 rotations of the 6-2 serve receive. I didn't explain rotations 4, 5, and 6 because these rotations are basically the same as the first 3 rotations.

    I’m having trouble timing the ball and I always swing into the net. How do I fix that?

      If you're hitting into the net, you're either late contacting the ball or the ball is contacted too far out in front. To make sure you have a vertical arm when you contact, you could practice hitting the ball out of a spike trainer. If you don't have a spike trainer available, you could have someone hold the ball high for you. Take an approach and hit the ball out of their hand. Get a feel of what it's like to contact the ball on the hand with a vertical arm. When you take an approach, be sure you are reaching up and not too far out in front. For timing, you need to become comfortable anticipating the ball. This means you watch the ball being set and anticipate where and when you need to approach. You've likely noticed when the set is lower than you expect, you hit the ball into the net. This is because when the set is lower, you need to go faster. If you don't go faster you will be late and hit the ball into the net. If you're in the habit of being late, a way to break the habit is to exaggerate going early. Go really early to get a feel what it's like to be early. This will help you figure out the correct timing for your approach. If you have a consistent setter available, then practice anticipating the set ball. If you don't have a setter available you can practice your timing on your own by self-tossing the ball. It's the same as jump serving. Toss the ball and take an approach. Learn to adjust your speed to the height of the toss. Practice tossing higher to force you to wait then go fast. Toss lower to make you go faster. This can help you learn to anticipate and get better at timing the ball. Hope this helps.

    at 7:32 ILLINI are out of rotation b/c the LF isn't LEFT of the person next to the net (although you are explaining how the setter is making sure she is in the proper position) Middle Front is overlapping with Left Front

      When the setter is left back, the left front is positioned in the left front at the net. The middle front player receives the serve, overhead passes the ball to the setter and then attacks the ball that's set to the outside. @mchip10 Is this the play you're talking about?
